Others diverted their minds from faith by heading in a different direction. They claimed this sign, the exorcism, was not in itself enough to warrant faith. They needed more evidence, more sign miracles, and then, presumably, yet more. There would never be enough, and in reality this was simply a refusal to believe. The witnessing of this remarkable deliverance of the man was enough to warrant faith in anyone who was thinking clearly and drawing logical and reasonable conclusions. It was a good work, a work that brought the man into freedom, that restored his God given faculties as a man, that released him from the pain of demon possession, a work which no one else they knew was capable of, a work that showed his mastery of the spiritual realm, and carried out at his bare command indicating that the demons were subject to him. That was enough for faith.
Application
It is not faith that is irrational, but unbelief. Unbelief is the twisting and turning of the mind in its refusal to submit to God and his revealed truth. We see the same thing when witnessing to people about the gospel. They bring up one objection, and we carefully try to answer the matter. They then leave that subject, being unable to successfully argue their case any further, and immediately they switch to another objection. Their minds are desperately grasping hold of anything within reach to justify their refusal to believe, and to fend off God from having any place in their lives. They do not want to believe.
