Jesus says this calmly perhaps, but it is devastating language. How would you like a guest to say this before the meal began? ‘Now do ye Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness.
We note the fearlessness of Christ. His silence and his compliance were not to be purchased by this small and insincere favour. No one can escape the judgment of God by giving the Lord some token gift which substitutes for a whole heap of malice and evil intent. There is nothing we can give the Lord, for all that we possess has come from him in the first place, and we owe him all reverence and honour and gratitude. The Lord was not exaggerating when he spoke like this, or saying anything that was not true. Rather, he was stripping away the pretence in the man. Christ fears no man, and he shows favour to none. ‘For there is no respect of persons with God’ (Romans 2:11). He can never be put in a position where he is obliged to keep silent, not say what he knows, and to withhold judgment. It is because he knew all about this man that he spoke as he did, and the strength of his language shocks us because this is so unlike how society normally behaves.
