At this point there is a reaction among his hearers. They were staggered at first to hear his assault on the Pharisees. There must have been stunned silence as he delivered this condemnation, but at last one of them recovers enough to ask a question. What about another group of people who are present there? What about the lawyers? The lawyer who asks maintains a veneer of respect and calls Christ ‘Master’, though he must have known that many were silently seething with rage. Is this teacher going to make similar charges against the lawyers also? Has he just got it in for the Pharisees? No, there is an additional and quite separate list of charges against the lawyers. They are not going to be excused. The question reminds us of Judas’s enquiry, ‘Is it I?’ The lawyers knew their sins well enough; this was really an enquiry as to whether Christ had detected the evil that was within them. There was some vain hope that the question would produce a blank response, but the opposite was the case, and it provoked an avalanche of further condemnation.
Application
How much the Lord has to say against us for our sinful lives, and how much is held back until the appropriate time. God has no shortage of things to say to any one of us for our lives. The charge sheet against us is very long. Amazingly, when a person comes to Christ for pardon, the whole long list is destroyed, and not read out line by line. But the lawyers, the legal experts in the law, had their own specific sins, which were peculiar to them.
