The next five verses form a single argument. While masquerading as a friend of God, the religious hypocrite shows his true credentials when he persecutes God’s genuine children.
True believers love all the children of God, those who lived before them as well as those contemporary with them. They rejoice in their victories, and their mourn over their persecutions and sorrows. But equally, they are against the enemies of God. While those enemies are alive, they endeavour to win them to Christ, but once they die in that unbelieving state, they are beyond help, and they are counted as enemies of the gospel. The child of God is careful not to include in the family of God anyone who does not belong there.
