That word ‘merry’ means at ease, satisfied. Let your mind rest, as the Greek implies.
What are the requirements of our souls? What do we need? Our souls can never be filled until we know the Lord. We are made by God to need him and to know him and to receive his strength and his blessing and his wisdom. We cannot possibly be satisfied with these faculties of ours, with this spiritual equipment of ours, dead as it is. We can never be satisfied until we know the Lord. But this man has said, ‘Oh no, I'm not like that. If I can just achieve a certain level of possessions and wealth, I will be fully satisfied.’ He has conditioned himself, and shrivelled himself, and shrunk himself down, so that he can be satisfied with next to nothing. What a tragedy that is! How much conditioning it must require over the years, to turn oneself into a near animal, just an intelligent animal satisfied only with things we can get off the face of the earth! Wealth and possessions and importance and things like that. How much greater are the needs of the soul.
