‘And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants.’ This is a twist in the illustration. The Lord says, it is the servants who are watching even into the early hours who will not be caught out, and when the bridegroom returns with his bride they will be blessed. It means this: you don't watch just for ten minutes,. You don't say, ‘I have heard that he is not far away. He will be here about quarter past one, and we will wake up at one, and stay up until half past one. If he is not here by then, it's all over. We are not waiting anymore.’ No, blessed are those people who are watching all the time.
Application
When you come to Christ and you repent of your sin and you yield your life to him; when he changes you and makes you a true Christian, you are for him all the time. It is not a five-minute experience. You are not a Christian in March and not in the following months. You have been changed and you love him. His interests are your interests. It is a way of looking at conversion. Blessed are those who have come to know him and they pray to him and walk with him. He is their chief interest.
