There is a wonderful reward which comes to the Christian. The believer has to say, ‘I don't deserve a reward. I was only able to become a Christian because the Holy Spirit shook my proud heart and opened up my thinking and brought me to see my need. I only ever became a Christian because Jesus Christ suffered and died for me and bore the punishment of sin for me. God has been so patient with me, and yet I am pictured as a steward who will receive a wonderful reward.’ Of course, it is a reward by mercy, and by grace alone. It is the plan of God that we go to heaven, that place in glory, everlastingly. The language of the parable is showing us this: those who are believers are very blessed now, but when the Lord comes they will receive an even greater liberty, because they will go to heaven and they will be with him. That is the highest honour possible, having constant access to the living God. No longer subject to this sinful world and all its unreasonableness; no longer subject to aging, weakening, disappointment, or any of these things. At total liberty, living and reigning with Christ is the language of the Bible. So that's the picture of the Lord: a faithful steward, and a wise steward has this great liberty and a glorious future. That is the plan of God. We start off as vagrants, as rebels against him, as people who will not acknowledge him and own him. If we listen to him and we come to him, he makes us stewards, wise and faithful and changes and transforms our lives, and then at the end of life he exalts us to glory.
