(Synoptics: Luke 13:1-5)The mention of Pilate places this event in Judea, over which he had jurisdiction. These Galileans were therefore on pilgrimage from their home region.
Note the absolute assurance with which the Lord speaks. He knows why these things have happened because he is the Son of God, equal with the Father. As God, he knows why he has taken the lives of these men. He has set a limit on the duration of their lives, and he has taken them out of the world, just as he ends the life of every man and woman born, and determines the place and circumstances of their departure. He does not offer this explanation to his hearers as an opinion, but as absolute fact.
