Comments
The hypocrite usually tries to have the last word, but on this occasion the argument of the Lord was so watertight that there no response was possible. They were silenced, and there was a smouldering hatred in the hearts of these men who had been silenced and shamed against their will. They were put to shame, and that is the last thing a proud man wants to happen. Shame is the one thing that people cannot bear. Shame comes from the conscience, and therefore mankind works overtime to suppress his conscience. He uses various techniques to help him. He sins repeatedly to desensitise conscience. He flaunts his sin and silences the disapproval of his fellow man. That is one source of shame that he can get rid of. Often he is successful to a certain extent, but the conscience is still there, and shame can rise out of the ashes when it is thought to be completely dead. But the people were released from their respect for these phony teachers. They saw the truth of what Christ said, and they knew he was right. They rejoiced in the glorious miracles they were seeing. Some may actually have come to believe in him. Others were happy to see the miracle. They were probably pleased also to see the leading men of the synagogue put to shame, because they knew in their heart that the religion of these men was not real.
Application
They rejoiced in Christ, and this is what the new convert does. He has gained something which is of incalculable value, something which can never be lost. In Christ he has one who understands the human predicament perfectly, and who knows how to lose us from the bonds of sin. He goes forward through the rest of his life walking with his Saviour who will guide him to glory.
