How badly human beings can miscalculate in judging others! The standard by which we count ourselves to be accepted in the sight of God, and others to be rejected, can be so far from the mark. Comparative righteousness is a very dangerous thing, for it is too easily subject to self-deception, and the lies of the devil. There is only one safe standard by which we can measure ourselves, and that is God’s own standard. If all our hope is based on our being better than others, the whole basis of our hope could evaporate in a moment. We will discover we were only looking at ourselves superficially. But at the judgment it will be God who looks at us, and unless we are wearing the righteousness of Christ we will be found naked.
