But the three people mentioned specifically in the parable all made excuses. Now there were obviously more than three people invited to the dinner.
This illustrates us in our response to the gospel. This is true even of those who have now come to faith: initially they did not want this message. Some people are still making excuses. When the gospel invitation goes out to come to God's feast, all of us respond in this way. It doesn’t cost any thought at all. It is an immediate, impulsive, but definite reaction: ‘I want no part of the things of God, I want no part of a transformed life and conversion, repenting and seeking the Lord.’ So far are we from him that the immediate reaction is to reject this and to begin to make excuses.
Imagine being invited to Buckingham Palace as a New Year’s Honour recipient. You have the invitation before you; all is arranged; the very day has come; the monarch is waiting for you, and you send a message to say, you have decided top go shopping instead. The insult would be palpable.
