The prodigal begins his prepared words of repentance, but before he gets far, his father interrupts. He is going to do far more for his son than his son dared imagine. This is nature of God’s grace. We deserve to be condemned, but he adopts us, justifies us, remakes us, and he will eventually raise us from dead. He gives us what we are not worthy to receive. Fatherhood at its best on earth is a feeble picture of God’s love towards returning sinners. He has created fathers and fatherly instincts to give a feint picture of his kindness, in order to encourage us to come to him. The parable entitles us to see God in this way, and to expect such kindness from him.
