Luke 15:22 Commentary and Bible Study

Is there anyone who realizes that he is a sinner, that he deserves nothing from God, and he needs forgiveness and new life? If you come to the Lord, and you repent of your sin, you believe in Christ and depend upon him; if you humbly and earnestly say, ‘Lord I leave my old life behind. Change me, forgive me, convert my soul’, then this is exactly what the Lord will do. He will command the angels, and by the Spirit of God he will say bring forth a robe, and put it on that person. That is Bible language which means he will change us like a person who is in rags and tatters is dressed in a new splendid robe. The person is transformed in appearance. You come to God and he will transform you. He will begin to change you the rags and tatters of your old character – your mean ways, your pride, your selfishness, and deceitfulness – and he will make a new person of you. He will put a ring on your finger. That is Bible language which means he will bring you into his household and give you the ring of sonship, daughterhood. He will put it on your finger: in other words he will adopt you. You have become a Christian; you are now a member of God's family, you are his child, and he will never let you go. He will put shoes on your feet. In those olden times, when people were poor, the slaves, the ordinary people couldn't wear anything on their feet. But if you were a member of a noble family, this is what marked you out. Now your soul is alive. You can become a man, a woman, of prayer. You can love him and live for him.
