There is so much in these words about the compassion, and gentleness, and kindness of God. How much feeling he has for us, and how much mercy and pity he has at the human predicament. That mercy should move us to call on his name, to take advantage of his kindness. The wrath of God may move us to fear, and to look out for our spiritual deliverance, but it is the love of God that will encourage us to draw near to him in the familiar way that we should when we come to Christ for salvation. Are you spiritually dead? Oh that you may have life, spiritual life given you by Jesus Christ, infused into you! ‘This my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.’ Are you lost spiritually? Blundering your way to death and to punishment? Oh, that you may be given life. Come to Christ, discover him, plead with him, ask him. He won't turn you away. That's why he told this parable to encourage you to yield to him.
