In the parable we get another impossibility. The rich man in hell is able to call out to Abraham in heaven and of course that is impossible, but it's made possible in the parable for the sake of making an important point.
The rich man directs his cry to heaven. In reality, if you die unforgiven by God – unsaved, unchanged, not walking with him and loving him and serving him – then the moment you leave this world, it is too late to pray. You are under judgement; all hope is gone. Tragically, the rich man got his desire. He never wanted God in life, so he won't get him in death. He never worshipped him or sought him in life, so he will never find him or speak to him in death. We get what we want, your present life is your vote.
There are, as it were, two boxes you can choose as you vote with your life: the box to know the Lord, or the box to reject the Lord. It may be today and tomorrow and next week that you will be crossing that box, marked ’I reject him’. ‘I don't want him. I want to go my own way, I want to live my own life, I want to commit sin, I want to enjoy myself in all sorts of wrong ways as well as right ways. I want to be my own captain and master and governor. I do not want God and I won't believe in him. I won't go before him in prayer and humble myself and give him my life.’
