Listen to the answer of Abraham: ‘Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.’ They have the word of God, they have the precious Bible, the divinely inspired book of God, let them hear that. Let them believe the message of salvation, the message of Jesus Christ the Saviour: that he would come into the world and suffer and die for sinners. Let them believe and hear this message of mercy and rescue for human souls, because the message of the Bible is the message of God, saying, ‘In my loving kindness and my pity I will forgive you, if you trust in Jesus Christ, my eternal Son, who came to bear the punishment of all who trust in him. I will forgive you freely all your sin, however foul, however objectionable to me, however much it deserves my righteous judgment. I will pour out my wrath on my only begotten Son on Calvary's cross, and I will forgive you.’ Christ has come and he has suffered and died, and he has risen from the dead to prove that he was the Son of God, and that he had been successful in bearing away the punishment for our sin.

Application

What could be clearer than the word of God? Foolish men think that God could have written his word differently, made it clearer, given us an additional authority, an additional testimony to back it up and reinforce it, something more convincing to the human mind. The word of God is perfect, and his communication to the human race could not be improved on. Our failure to heed it is entirely due to us. God is the perfect communicator. He could not have done more to show us how urgent these things are. We could not have made his warnings more urgent. Here is this amazing way in which Christ forewarns us of the disaster that awaits us if we do not turn to him. He takes us into hell itself, to help us to envisage in the most realistic way we can. the despair that will meet us there. And yet we treat this warning as if it was a fantasy of no relevance to us. What more could he do to alert us to our danger.
