But sadly the same thing happens again, and this time you are not so ready to forgive. The repentance you saw, and the apology you received: were they really genuine? How could they be so quickly followed up by a repeat of the same behaviour? You are not going to be taken advantage of. You have learnt your lesson. You are not going to forgive so quickly this time. But yes, you are, says the Lord Jesus. Neither are you going to set a limit on the number of times you do this. You cannot look into the heart of that other person, only God can. You are required to take their repentance at face value. You are not to be naïve, and there may truly be signs that the repentance is not sincere, in which case it is a different matter. But assuming you have no reason to doubt the person’s sincerity, other than that the same thing has happened again, you must be ready to forgive. How many times does God forgive us in a day. We are only being taught to be like our heavenly Father.
