‘A certain ruler asked the Lord, saying, good master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?’ It is worth noting what had just gone before this passage. There was Christ blessing the children, and he had said, ‘Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child shall in no wise enter therein.
How many underestimate their need and come to the Lord for something far less than they really need! How many fail to see how much the Lord must do for them if they are ever going to escape condemnation!
Straight away we have to make things clear that giving anything up doesn't make you a Christian. It doesn't matter what you give up – how much, how often, how long you were giving things up – it would not make you a Christian. And yet there are certain things which are barriers, impediments, and we need to be challenged about these things. Just suppose there is somebody who has a fear of flying, a deep fear – maybe for a time, in some cases perhaps lifelong – and nothing would drag that person onto an aircraft to make a journey. Yes, but let's suppose that suddenly somehow that person conquers that fear of flying. The fact that they have conquered the fear of flying doesn't make them able to fly. They can now get on the aircraft. It will power down the runway, it will take off, it will travel perhaps thousands of miles and get them to some distant place wherever they want to go, but they cannot travel by themselves without that aircraft. They are dependent entirely upon the aircraft, but there was an impediment which stopped them ever getting onto it, and that is what we are thinking of in this passage. It is about impediments, barriers, things in the way that stop us from even coming to Christ with a full and sincere heart, and casting ourselves at his feet and saying, ‘Lord save me, Lord deal with me.’ We have got to give up certain things to enter into the kingdom of heaven. There is no credit in doing so. Salvation is all of the Lord, it is his work to be the aircraft that carries us to heaven. It is he who changes our hearts, renews our spirits, pardons our sins, and brings us close to himself. But it is important that we make sure there is not some barrier, some impediment holding us up. This is the account of someone who had a tremendous impediment.
