The question the young man had asked was, ‘What shall I do to inherit eternal life?’ It is a legal question, and Christ gives him a legal answer. It is impossible for members of this fallen human race to keep God’s law, because sin is constantly expressing itself, and though we are responsible for all that we do, sin is in control of our desires, our thoughts, our actions, and our will, and it is determined to dominate us.
Those who think that they are fit for heaven on the basis of a superficial assessment of their behaviour, have not yet begun to search their hearts as they need to. Conversion to God begins with a deep realisation of how polluted we are. Instead of easily justifying ourselves, we see sin and guilt in every direction we look. None of our deeds are pure in our eyes, and we wonder how we have been allowed to get away with so much disobedience for so long without being called to account.
