One thing this man lacked. That doesn't mean to say that he only had one sin.
How much do we value the kingdom of heaven? If the Lord puts his finger on our master sin, will we be willing to break with it, or will the cost be too much for us? Anyone who is not prepared to give up everything that they have in this life in order to gain Christ is not worthy of him. They have not seen the value of him. Their minds are still set on this world, on the things that are passing away, and they are clinging to them as if they will be here forever. Christ does not urge us to leave all that we have in this life for his sake because he wants to deprive us of what is good. On the contrary, he wants to give us true riches. But he knows that our infatuation with this life is a fatal obstacle to our ever coming to him. Therefore there has to be a complete break with the old life. This calculation of what we stand to lose and what we stand to gain cannot be put off till later. It comes right at the start of the Christian life. We have to leave the old life behind at the door, at the gateway into the kingdom. We cannot take any of those treasures we had in this world with us. Is the price too high? For many, yes, it will be. But for those who the Spirit of God enlightens, the decision is clear; the gain is obvious. How can earth be compared with eternity? We must pray for understanding to make the right choice and to make it wholeheartedly. To go back afterwards is to lose heaven.
