They are terrified, ‘and the angel said unto them, Fear not’, and he probably not only said it, but by his great power he caused them to be calmed and their trembling has stopped. Those words calmed them and they were able to listen and take them in.
Conversion to God has similarities to this appearance. It starts with a kind of great light. Understanding dawns on your mind. ‘There is a God. I am a small creature made by him and accountable to him. I never felt this before. I have always treated any talk about God lightly. I pushed it away, but God is real and is true.’ The light comes to you, just as they were overwhelmed, and it is the light which brings you great understanding. The gospel brings you good tidings news from God. God is going to do something which enables him to channel his favour to you. The Saviour of the world has come, and the good tidings is about the possibility of forgiveness of sin and life from God, and being put on the road to heaven and being a child of God, being in his care and under his guidance, knowing him and being given the faculty of prayer so that you can call upon him and he is guiding you and strengthening you, making you a holy and a better person, and equipping you progressively for the day when you are called home to eternal glory. How much better this is than news, let us say, of a legacy left to you from a relative. Although you are going to be able to buy whatever material thing you want on earth, and do whatever you want, and go wherever you want, it is all about material things which you cannot take it with you. It is not the best news by any means. The really good news is to have hope of heaven and a friend in heaven and a Saviour.
