The shepherds had gone in response to the angel’s message. They had observed these wonderful things and now they came back as changed men.
Praise of God is compulsive for those who have seen his glory. What we have seen of him builds up like pressure within our hearts, so that we have to release it in words of praise to God. His glory cannot remain unexpressed; we cannot remain silent. The whole creation must know about what we have seen. God has showed it to us to give us the privilege of telling others.
Conversion is an experience of being reconciled with God. It can be summed up in those words ‘heard and seen’. You have here the way of salvation. You hear that Christ came. You hear that he grew and he preached and he lived a perfect life, and he worked mighty miracles. He revealed himself and demonstrated himself to be the Son of God. Then you hear of Calvary and how he permitted himself in apparent weakness to be arrested and nailed to a cross, and you hear of how he hung on that cross dying between two thieves for six hours, three of which were plunged into darkness. And you hear the meaning of it: that on that cross there was something infinitely worse than the pain of nails to hands and feet, that he the Son of God took upon himself all the punishment of our sin. God the Father looked upon him from the eternal glory, and poured out upon him the punishment of all who would be forgiven and in his mighty love he bore it away through that indescribable agony by which he suffered out eternal punishment. You hear these things and then you hear that you can go before him and repent of your sin and you can desire to leave the old life behind, know him and be changed: have a new nature and a new life and be ruled by him. But then there is the other side. They heard the word the message of the angel, and they went and they saw and it's like that with conversion. You repent, you believe, and then you begin to see. You begin to understand so much more about the Lord. You have an experience of conversion, you know your nature has been changed. You know you have been reconciled with God. You discover you can pray in a new way you have an unfolding experience of God, hearing and answering your prayers. All who hear the gospel and respond to this message by seeking the Lord Jesus Christ as their Saviour will come again rejoicing. They will glorify God because they have understood that he has sent a Christ the Saviour into the world, who has become their Lord and Saviour. Coming to know him has transformed their lives and their eternal future. They will look back on this day as the day they crossed over from death to life, and they will never be the same again. They will give eternal thanks for that day.
