‘And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon.’ When you see that little phrase ‘and behold’, you know that you are being summoned to something which is especially striking.
You could not describe a man as devout who worshipped once a week on Sunday morning only. You may be just before God, but you are not devout, not very diligent. You don't want to hear the word during the week; you don't want to come and support the evangelistic service and pray for souls and sing the praise of God again. Some people’s lives are so complex that they cannot, but others are not doing all they could do. They do not have any avenues of service for the Lord. Devout means you are diligent and loyal in your worship, in your prayers, in your study of God's word.
May the Holy Spirit be upon every believer as we seek to serve Christ. How do we ensure that the Holy Spirit is upon us? The apostle Paul says, ‘Be filled with the Spirit’, so there is something we must do to seek to be open to the filling of the Spirit. We pray for help in everything we do. You may not actually mention the Holy Spirit when you pray for help, but you get rid of self-confidence and self-reliance, and you do not swagger. You commit your life to the Lord, and you pray to be useful to him and you mean it. As you pray the Holy Spirit will be upon you. From your heart comes an interest and a burden for other people around you, and you find that God enables you to be a helper to others, one who may testify to others, one who may lead others to Christ, one who may be a counsellor, a friend providing comfort and encouragement to others. You are a person through whom comes the blessings of salvation, the blessings of life, and spiritual living.
Are you a just person in that twofold sense? Justified before God, not by your own merits, but because you are saved and you are covered by Christ through his atoning for your sins, and because he has imputed to you his perfect righteousness? Then are you a just and righteous person in the second sense: that the principle of righteousness is at work within you, and you hunger and thirst after it? By the help of God you control your sins and you live righteous lives. Will you be a devout person, faithful, loyal conscientious in the duties of the Christian life in worship in reading of the word, in prayer every day, and will you be one who is waiting for the coming of Christ? That is the great objective of life. You do nothing without bearing in mind that your life is to bring glory to God. Because you are waiting for that great day when Christ returns and you are open to him, the Holy Spirit will be upon you. You are concerned to be an unselfish outgoing person, a person who can say profound things, a person who can witness to Christ, and everything in your life is to that end.
