This narrative is so familiar to all, but do we grasp the significance of the way in which God planned this event? It was no accident that the couple arrived late. No doubt there was much difficulty in the journey for them, with Mary about to give birth.
‘No room for them in the inn’, no room for the Messiah when he was born into the world – the lesson is so obvious to us all. Isn't that just how it is? No room for God, no room for godliness in the hearts of people by nature. There is no room for God in our thinking until God begins to work in our hearts and brings us to see our spiritual emptiness and need; we reject these things. It is all played out in the very earliest hours and days of the life of our dear Saviour. There he is wrapped in swaddling clothes (or cloths), just wrapped around him as the poor would do. He was born into relatively poor circumstances, rejected by the religious establishment and outcast by most people. He is available only to those who come with humble hearts to repent of their sins and to seek him in a spiritual manner.
