Luke 21:37 Commentary and Bible Study

Luke describes Christ’s final days on earth. As he had done throughout his public ministry, so he continued to do at every opportunity. He taught the people, because they were as sheep without a shepherd, and those who should have fed them from the word of God were ignorant and giving them insubstantial food, and were instead fleecing the flock. He taught in the temple, still the house of God at that time, and the place of offerings and sacrifices. Though it was soon due to pass away, and not one stone would be left upon another, it remained for the time being the proper place of worship. It was the place where the people gathered for instruction. But not many days from now the veil of the temple would be rent, signifying that all the symbolism of the temple was now fulfilled, and the work of redemption complete and the way into the holiest now made open, and the true Lamb of God had been sacrificed. Christ worked and taught to the last. At night he went out of the city to the Mount of Olives opposite the temple mount, and either lodged with friends or slept in the open. But in the morning the people gathered early to be taught, knowing apparently that he would come to teach them, and coming eagerly to hear. But how many understood when they were soon to call for his crucifixion? Perhaps there were many among those later converted under the preaching of the apostles, who had heard him teaching in the temple before his death.
