Explain meaning of Luke 22:27

Which is greater, Christ asks, the one who sits at the table and is served, or the one who brings food to the one who is seated? The question is about roles and stations, not about intrinsic worth, for then it would be impossible to answer the question, and the question requires an answer. It might well be that the one serving has greater intelligence, greater skill, greater physique, but the question is about which one has the greater status in society when he assumes such a position, and the answer is obvious: ‘Is it not he that sitteth at meat?’But then comes the extraordinary unexpected truth: ‘But I am among you as he that serveth.
