Any idea that Pilate was a genuine man, with a real interest in the person of the Lord Jesus seems to be ruled out by this verse. Herod was a particularly evil man, and for Pilate to become his friend over this incident was completely inconsistent with any right attitude towards the gospel at this stage in his life.
Application
It is something deeply disturbing that men can form strong friendships on the basis of having a shared evil purpose in common. It indicates a pact between them not to pass judgment on each other regarding this matter, but to turn a blind eye. They are united in falsehood. Both men knew that Jesus was innocent, but that did not stop them lying to each other about the case. How will such friendships last? They will all be dissolved on the Day of Judgment, when, faced with God’s righteous verdict on their lives, they will abandon earthly loyalties, and betray in other in a desperate attempt to exonerate themselves.
