Luke 24:12 Commentary and Bible Study

Luke does not tell us about the separate report of Mary Magdalene, but puts all the women’s messages together, and summarises by saying that Peter ran to the sepulchre. John explains that he also went with Peter (John 20:3), but as so often the Gospel writers select what they wish to include from a larger body of truth. Peter goes into the tomb, and the implication of John 20:8 is that he does not yet believe that Christ is risen. But he is greatly perplexed at what he sees. He sees the orderly state of the sepulchre, and cannot make sense of what he sees. It is not consistent with a robbery of the grave. Who would have removed the graveclothes and then carefully folded them up before taking the corpse? There was no sign of hurried removal of the body of Jesus.
