Luke 24:13 Commentary and Bible Study

(Synoptics: Luke 24:13-32)Here in this passage we learn how the Lord started with the lesser disciples, the fringe disciples almost. We read of two disciples who have become very discouraged about the events that have taken place, and are leaving Jerusalem, thinking that their hopes have been dashed and Christ’s mission has failed. It is quite late in the day, and they travel the sixty stadia, or about seven miles, to the village of Emmaus. Judging by their offer of hospitality to Christ (Luke 24:29-30), it is likely that this was where they lived or were staying.There is only one topic of conversation, and their minds are full of it. They rehearse the events of the last few days, and go over them again and again, trying to understand what they mean. But their mood is gloomy, for they do not believe that he is risen in spite of the women, whose animated testimony they seem to have heard personally. It is clear that there were a considerable number of others besides the eleven apostles who were part of the group and who heard these things. As yet, the Lord’s saying to the apostles applies to these two men also: ‘Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful’ (John 16:20), but their sorrow is about to ‘be turned into joy’.
