Are they surprised at what has happened in front of their eyes? Some of these Scriptures were obscure to them, but now that Christ has explained them they can understand them all. Not one of them has failed. God has watched over his word so that not one jot or tittle has fallen to the ground. True prophecy does not have a high probability of being fulfilled; it is not enough that most of it is fulfilled. God cannot speak a single word that does not come to pass, and what is contained in the Scriptures is by his providence, and by the light of discernment that he has give to his people, only Scripture and all that he has determined should be preserved in his Scripture with nothing missing. The Lord Jesus understood it all and he explained it all to his disciples. He mentions the law of Moses, the Pentateuch, as well as the prophets and the psalms, the three major divisions of the Old Testament. Some prophecies he had deliberately fulfilled (Luke 22:36-37); some had been fulfilled by the providence of God (Luke 23:34). Christ had cooperated with every prophecy and he had watched to his encouragement and seen all these things take place. But they were not only for his encouragement and, as a man, to fill him with confidence that the plan of God was on track, even in the hardest moments; they were also for his disciples. They too must draw that tremendous encouragement from knowing that the purposes of God are firm and sure, and nothing is left to chance. They were living in the midst of the unfolding of Scripture, and to their great assurance could see it unfolding before their eyes. Scripture was not given for them to remain confused, and to find events perplexing, and to be sad. Those who are on the Lord’s side have utmost reason to rejoice, and so their foolish unbelief needed to be corrected. And the correction worked, even later for Thomas when he was back with them. They were pulled out of their despondency and the very same events became the source of solid confidence and great joy.The resurrection of Christ is taught in several distinct ways in the Old Testament. In Genesis it was often taught in types, as in the case of Joseph and the wonderful deliverances he saw in his life. In the prophets it was taught by clear predictions and all the riches of short-term and long-term prophecy, sometimes in the form of secondary fulfilment, and in the psalms it was taught in prophetic and poetic form.
