The soldiers also came to John. This is work which some Christians have been reluctant to do.
The Christians lives by a standard which is very different to those around him. He cannot be a weak person if he is going to do this. He cannot be someone who always has his eye on what others are doing and tries to fit in with them and adjust to their standards. He must be unafraid to stand out as different, and not be a cringing person. The development of courage will have to come early for the believer. By his lifestyle he will offer a rebuke to those who do evil, and they will soon turn their anger on him, for they perceive that even if he does not rebuke them openly, he condemns them by his life.
Godliness with contentment is great gain, says the apostle. The godly soldier is a blessing to others, just as the godly tax collector. Contentment can only come by a realisation that God will supply all our needs, that this world is not our home, and that our treasure is in heaven and is kept safe by the Lord himself. Therefore we can be content with our wages even though others around us are complaining.
