Who is Christ addressing when he says these words? We have been told that there is more than one party present. There are the twelve apostles, there are the larger number of disciples, and then there are others who have come to hear him and to be healed.
Is it really important to be humble before God? Is it really important to be poor in spirit before God? The Lord tells us that our eternal future depends upon it: ‘for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.’ God's spiritual kingdom has come in Jesus Christ in the hearts of believers, but in its fullest sense it is yet to come. The kingdom of heaven is that state of glory which the saints shall enjoy when they reign with God and his angels forever. Sin, hell and death will have been subdued. This is the prospect of those that humble themselves before the living God, recognizing their unworthiness, and recognizing the infinite worthiness of Christ and being dependent on him. If this is where you are, then yours is the kingdom of heaven. You will be given a crown of life and glory that fadeth not away.
