The very similar saying in Matthew is used to teach a quite different lesson, and we must try to understand the saying here in context. In Matthew’s Gospel Christ uses it to teach his disciples to expect the same persecution that he suffered; here it is to show the goal that the blind should aim at when they find, not a blind guide, but a sighted guide from whom they can obtain light and understanding. It applies to Christ’s disciples in the role of pupils who labour to understand and put into practice their Lord’s teaching, and it applies to them in the future as they too become teachers of others. They will in due time teach with apostolic authority and that will be binding on the churches, and no one is to think that they can depart from it or go beyond it. This does not set a limit on how far the disciple can go, for the truth that he has been given comes from heaven and has divine authority. It is the word of the living God and we can spend a lifetime exploring it.
Application
What happens if we choose to be instructed by a blind guide, and make a blind guide our master? We cannot profit from such a master, for we can learn no more than he knows, and he knows nothing. Sadly some of us will take as our guides people and things that are even smaller than we are; in fact you can say that most people do this. They say, ‘I know where I'm going to look for my opinions and understandings of spiritual things’, and then they select something which they can manage and manipulate, and choose a religion of convenience which will not put any serious demands on them, or require any real change.
