‘When Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him,’ at what the centurion had said in his message, ‘and turned him about and said unto the people that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel’, or as we might say today, ‘no, not in the whole of Israel.’ Now that is quite an astounding thing to say, and as many people have pointed out there are really only two occasions in all the Gospels and the whole of the New Testament when it is recorded that Christ marvelled at something, marvelled at it and was taken aback in awe.
There are some who have grown up in homes where the Bible is believed, and these things are taught constantly, but they still don’t believe it, not fully, not really. They are keeping their options open. ‘Maybe I won't reject it altogether, but I want to explore a bit. I want to spread my wings. I don't altogether believe that this world will disappoint me. I think I want a little bit of the things I can have now.’ That is how people very often think, and here it is exactly the same. The Jews were the slowest to believe in him, and this man with a Roman background sees the point. What a tragedy that is! What a sad, sad thing that people who have all the training, all the information, all the evidence, somehow remain hard in heart! Is that true of you? It's an amazing phenomenon, but it was true in those days.
