(Synoptics: Luke 8:1-3)The Lord Jesus Christ had told his disciples at the start of his first Galilean ministry, ‘I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent’ (Luke 4:43), and he was careful to carry out this commission given him by his heavenly Father. ‘He went throughout every city and village’, visiting the small population centres as well as the large.
Their devotion formed a pattern for all Christ’s disciples in the church age. Those who have received such benefits from the Lord, cannot be content to live out their lives centred on themselves and their own comforts and ease. These women had to express their gratitude in some way, and they did what they could. They were not going to be sent to preach: that is not the rule for the church, for Christ requires that the order that he has created between men and women on earth be maintained in his church also. But there was still much that they could do to advance the cause of the gospel. It is a noble thing when we do not count our goods as our own, but recognise that all that we have belongs to the Lord, and should be at his disposal. They were devoted to Christ and from their substance they provided food for him and his disciples. There is nothing better that we can do with our goods than to use them in his service, and thereby transform transient earthly things into a treasure in heaven that does not fade away. Christ was pleased to accept their service. Both men and women have a vital role to perform in the kingdom of heaven.
