‘And he said to his disciples, Make them sit down by fifties in a company’, and they did so, and arranged the people in groups. The Greek translated ‘sit down’ indicates elsewhere, ‘recline’, as if you are sitting down for a large meal or for a feast. Make them sit down in groups of fifties. Partly that is probably to facilitate the serving of the food, but there's another reason too. These companies are like a kind of military display, and it's deeply suggestive of this: that all the people must be sat down in groups so that everybody can see Christ. Now it isn't absolutely spelled out in the four Gospels, but it's deeply suggested by the language. Everybody will see him. They complied; they were meek, obedient to this instruction.
Application
To meet with God, we better comply with his word and what he says. ‘Come unto me’, says Jesus Christ, ‘come humbly, be ready to be dealt with, to be helped. Don't come cynically, abusively, rebelliously.’ To come to Jesus Christ, we must come believing in him, humbling ourselves, listening to the terms and the instructions that he gives us to receive salvation.
