Luke 9:21
Comments
The Lord probably gave this command, not because the good news of the coming of the Messiah into the world is to be kept hidden, but because before his death and resurrection the notions of the people about the Messiah were so subject to misunderstanding, that it was counterproductive to publish this at that time. Later the disciples were to go into all the world and preach that ‘Jesus is the Christ’ (1 John 5:1).
Application
This is taught right through the Gospels. It was absolutely necessary for the Lord Jesus Christ – before he becomes Lord and King of his church – to make an offering, a sin offering, to go to Calvary's Cross, to take in his own body, feelingfully, every ounce of punishment that you and I should have borne ourselves throughout all eternity. That is if we are among those people who will come to him and place our burden of sin upon him and ask him to forgive us. If we are among those people, then he has already taken away all the punishment due to us. He had to do that first.
