Christ was praying, and as he prayed his face and body were transfigured, giving off this tremendous, overpowering light of holiness. Demonstrating his power, his uniqueness, his majesty and his Godhead. There was a drawback to being a disciple. There was this strong likelihood as a disciple that you would become so familiar with the Lord in his physical body, that you could begin to forget that he was the Son of God. You have been with him two, three years. You appreciate him. You love him. You know he is the Christ of God – the disciples had just said that. You listen in awe to his teaching, but because he is here in a body of flesh, that might have the effect of causing you to underestimate him, fail fully to realize that he was at the same time the Lord of glory. So for the sake of some of these disciples, the Lord allows his glory and power, to what extent it can, to show through that earthly body, to create a deep impression upon them so that they would remember he was the Lord, the Son of God.
