In these verses the priests are condemned and the priesthood is effectively told, ‘You are finished, it will be all over for you, I will leave you functioning for a time, for the sake of the godly, but from now on there is no hope for the priests. Yes,’ I will say to you, ‘if you repent, if you change it will be different, I will offer you that, but I can tell you now, you won't, and therefore you will be doomed.’ So the ending of the Jewish priesthood at the time when the Gentiles shall come in is what is spoken of here in the second chapter. The Jewish order will be finished and if the Jewish order is finished then the whole of the Old Testament order is finished, because it is built around the priesthood and the offerings and the sacrifices. Instead of upholding God’s standard, the priests had given way to the pressure coming from those who had no taste for God’s ways, neither have they themselves loved their service for God. They had set the people such a poor example in keeping the law, that no one took seriously their instruction.They are charged with being partial in the law. That means that they have applied it partially, relaxing it for the sake of some for whom they had too much respect, and enforcing it on others who they did not fear among men. But the only way the law can be applied is equally to all without fear of favour.
