Malachi 3:3

He will bring them out of Judaism at the time of his incarnation, and he will save a new generation, and purge and purify them. They will offer up offerings of righteousness in worship and service to the Lord, and all that will be pleasant to the Lord. When the Messiah comes he will go through the lot of you, as we might say today, because most of you are dross and most of you are filth and he will wash you away. But he will not wash you all away because there will be a remnant and thank God there was a remnant. When Christ came, he preached and a remnant of Jews were saved and all the first teachers and evangelists of the Jewish church. The first members of the early church were Jews, so there was a remnant of Jews. Even though it was the beginning of the glorious gospel age when the Gentiles would form the vast majority of the church. Here then is the answer to the question of what will happen to Levi. Will his service completely end because of his corruption? Malachi has already warned them in very strong terms: ‘I will even send a curse upon you … I will corrupt your seed’ (Malachi 2:2-3). Can they recover from that curse? Not in any sense that they would have recognised. Nevertheless God would restore Levi in a very different form. The Levi of New Testament times would include every one of the remnant of Jews who would repent and put their trust in Christ. Furthermore, it would include ever believing Gentile also. Together they would be a kingdom of priests. So ’he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the Lord an offering of righteousness.’ Not the literal sons of Levi would be purified – though some of these also (Acts 4:36) – but the spiritual sons of Levi. And the offering that they would offer in righteousness would not be in the physical temple, but before the throne of grace.
