‘Hold thy peace, and come out of him.’ Literally, you could translate the Greek, ‘Be silenced’, and after that the demon could only make a hideous noise; he could not articulate any intelligible words. Christ would not accept testimony from demons, however well they knew who he was. God owes nothing to demons. Nevertheless this is recorded so that we understand that the spirit world responded to him with terror and recognised his authority and power to destroy them. The demon had to obey Christ and to come out of the man when he commanded, because he recognised his divine authority.
