What did he preach? He preached repentance and remission of sins, but he also spoke of the one coming after him. How did that one compare with John? John was so careful to minimise himself.
Isn’t it remarkable, because that is true of us also? Our Saviour, if we believe in him and we are converted to him and know him – mighty as he is, yet he tells us that we are his friends and we can approach him as children approach a father. He calls us brothers, and he embraces us and sets his love upon us. John has it correctly here: ‘one mightier than I.’ So mighty! He knew how to speak about Christ. He is mighty in being; he is God become man. He is mighty in status; he is the eternal ruler, he is the one by whom all things cohere. He holds together every particle, atom and power in the universe. Everything would just disintegrate but for his power and his presence and his will. He is mighty in learning. His knowledge is infinite. He knows everything, the entire history of the universe and every tiny thing that goes on in our lives. His authority is infinite – he will be the judge of all the earth. His work is so mighty, because he has come to secure eternal salvation for billions of people. His accomplishments, his power, his qualifications to be our Messiah – he is mighty in that sense, because he is absolutely perfect: the sinless, perfect Lamb of God. He can die for others and atone for others. He is mighty in terms of his eternity, because he will live for ever and he will cause us to live for ever with him. He is mighty in love and in mercy and in willingness to save. That is what John preached. The might and the majesty of Jesus Christ and he put it like this: ‘I am so small by comparison with him. I am not even fit to untie his shoelace. When you see him, you will see one who appears to be a man but make no mistake,’ John would preach, ‘he is mightier than we can imagine, because he is God incarnate.
