Now this makes the disciples anxious. Mark tells us that the disciples asked the question which prompted Christ’s words in verse 11 and 12. But Matthew records them as spoken to the Pharisees. Probably they were said twice, and the reason why the disciples asked him about this was because they had already heard what he had said to the Pharisees and it troubled them. So they were very concerned. Some of them were married, such as Peter. ‘Where does this leave us if we cannot divorce for any reason whatsoever, but only for adultery?’ They were puzzled by this strict view, so they asked him.
