The rich young ruler has called Christ ‘Good Master’. That is a respectful term, but Christ finds fault with it: ‘Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God.
Christ is God, and we must bow the knee to him. He may have come from heaven to earth and stooped down in his kindness, but he is the Son of the eternal Father. If we only grasped this, we would come with due reverence. You must recognise the Saviour if he is to deal with you. Some seek the Lord for years and do not find him. Sometimes they are in earnest and sometimes they are not. They need to grasp who they are coming to: the Son of God, our Maker.
Christ deals faithfully with all who come to him. No flattery in the approach or in the form of address will obtain a blessing from him. He was indeed the Good Master, but because these words were said without understanding, he rejected them from this man.
