And yet we read ‘Jesus beholding him, loved him.’ He loved this superficial, self-righteous man, with no sense of God’s holiness.
‘Jesus beholding him loved him.’ That should be a tremendous encouragement to the seeker to come to him for mercy. That is what brought him to earth, to suffer and die.
We too must love the lost like that. How can we pray if we have no compassion? We must love others: it is the basis of our zeal. Sometimes we need to think of our own salvation. Why should I be saved? Why should I be forgiven? Why should Christ suffer and die for me? I deserve nothing. I must have compassion for others and feeling and desire and pray with all that compassion for them. We must love others, it is the basis of our zeal – to want to see people saved.
We have known people who were so open – we felt sure they would believe, but they didn’t. There was still a stubborn attachment in them to the world. You may be someone like that. You may be the kind of person to give the preacher a good hearing, and be moved by the word, but you don’t come to the Lord. Often it is the person you don’t expect who comes. Eternal life was too expensive for this man. He couldn’t give up his goods and his riches. How tragic that is! How can eternal life be compared to all that the world has to give, added together?
