‘And when he heard this, he was very sorrowful: for he was very rich’ (Luke 18:23). He couldn’t do it, because he had devoted to himself to his possessions. Every believer reading this, grieves for the man. He made such a terrible choice. That moment was crucial in his life, and though he seemed to come so close, he went away with nothing. Christ who knew the man’s heart better than he knew it himself, had crystalised the perfect test that he needed to face. ‘You lack one thing.’ He didn’t have Christ or realise who he was, divine. He is intensely sad; he is heavy with distress; his soul is torn. Is there a seeker who senses the importance of eternal things as he sits under the sound of the gospel, but tomorrow he will forget it all and return to his old life? He doesn’t see his need clearly enough; he doesn’t fear the consequences of not securing salvation, so he drifts and the sense of urgency that once gripped him passes away.
