Christ is answering Peter not quite in the way he expects. He is talking about people who give up a settled home, not willingly, but because they are arrested, or persecuted.
You love the Lord – whether you are rich or whether you are poor. You live a reasonable lifestyle. You leave this constant quest for material gain and things you can show off, things that are expensive. You leave that behind and you give your means, to spiritual work, perhaps, to the poor and the needy. Christians do that. Over the years I have heard this so many times. Some young person could not afford a deposit for a home but someone has helped them. They won’t say who, they have been bound to secrecy. Someone has seen the need, and given them interest-free help and an advance for a period of time. There are so many ways in which Christian people help each other and assist the poor, assist those in need.
