He takes them back to the inspired law given through Moses which they were still under until Calvary, until the redeeming work of Christ, and his resurrection, and the founding of the church on the day of Pentecost. Until those great events when everything changed and the Jewish era and the reign of the ancient Jewish law came to an end and all was fulfilled in Christ; until that moment they were still under the law of Moses. And so he points them back to Moses in – you might say – contempt for all the generations of additions to the law: those uninspired human additions of their leaders and rabbis. ‘What did Moses command you?’ He throws their question back at them, indicating that they should answer it in a way that is consistent with the law.
