Then come details that he has never expressed before. ‘They shall mock him’; Matthew says, ‘And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock.’ He was mocked by the soldiers, Pilate’s soldier and Herod’s soldiers. None of this took him by surprise, but he did not flinch from it. For the Son of God to be treated like this is unthinkable from the perspective of the angels in heaven, and yet Christ came to bear just this, and humbled himself in a way that was, before he id it, inconceivable to heaven. ‘And shall scourge him’ – that took place during the time he spent in the guard room of the Praetorian Guard: the terribly cruel Roman scourging. ‘And shall spit upon him and shall kill him:’ crucify him, ‘and the third day he shall rise again.’
Application
Questions
How would they reconcile this clear statement that he is going to be arrested and tried and killed, with their notion that he is immediately going to set up his earthly rule? Well, they probably took it as a metaphor, as if Christ was saying this – ‘I am going to be disapproved of, they are going to be against me, and it will take the form of a great battle, but I will be as good as dead, the forces arrayed against me, but I will not actually die, I will prevail, and we shall win.’
