In spiritual work, what encourages the growth of pride? Surely it is obvious. It is to dwell on the human aspects of the work that we are doing. I'm very nervous about some aspects of Christian biography and yet I enjoy reading Christian biography greatly, and find it uplifting much of the time: and yes, very down-casting at other times. When you see what these servants of God in the past went through and what they achieved, it makes you feel so wretched and so worthless, and yet at the same time there are many great encouragements. But there is a nervousness, because you can read about George Whitfield, and the biographer gets carried away and turns him into a great man, with great gifts, and great power. We are summoned to consider his voice, his reach, and his powers. That is not wise. Christian work is of the Lord. We do our feeble best; all the good comes from the power of God, and the power of the Spirit. If we look too much at human gifts and people, and we will all get carried away.
